The Juvenile Assistant State’s Attorney reports directly to the Chief Juvenile Assistant State’s Attorney and is accountable to the State’s Attorney. The Juvenile Assistant handles cases as assigned by the Chief Juvenile Assistant State’s Attorney, reviews police and lab reports to ascertain any need for follow-up investigation, interviews civilian and police witnesses and advises each as to court appearances, examines physical evidence that may have been secured by the police agency, prepares demonstrative exhibits for court, identifies and secures the services of expert witnesses, determines appropriate courtroom strategy and researches relevant points of law, contests defense motions, including motions to suppress evidence and statements, responds to inquiries from victims, witnesses, and social service agencies concerning case status, and maintains a current status of criminal law in conformance with daily changes in points of law. Keeps up to date with the most recent supreme court and appellate court case rulings.
