Stewart J. Umholtz

Mr. Umholtz has served as State's Attorney of Tazewell County since September 12, 1995. He continues to enjoy the day to day opportunities of being a minister of justice.


He was born and raised in Tazewell County, the son of a steelworker and nurse, and continues to make his home there.


He served as an Assistant State's Attorney from 1985-95, with experience in Civil, Juvenile, Traffic, Misdemeanor and Felony cases. He has argued cases in both the state and federal trial courts, appellate courts and the Illinois Supreme Court.


Mr. Umholtz has the distinction of being the only Illinois State's Attorney to successfully prosecute a sitting Justice of the Illinois Supreme Court. When informed of this distinction, the Chicago Tribune reported: Umholtz said "Lucky me".


Mr. Umholtz was named the Outstanding Alum of the Northern Illinois University College of Law in 1996. For many years he volunteered as a coach for the Pekin High School swim team. Currently, he enjoys his time away from the courthouse bicycling, hiking, kayaking, dining and traveling.
